What Is Proof of Reserves, and Why Did It Become Important?

Before 2022, most participants in digital asset markets trusted the numbers an exchange or custodian published. FTX published numbers. Those numbers were false. Customer funds had been moved, commingled with the trading arm, and largely lost by the time withdrawal requests arrived. The lesson was specific: self-reported balances without independent verification are not evidence of solvency.

Proof of reserves is the practice of providing external, verifiable evidence that an entity holds the assets it claims to hold. For centralized exchanges and custodians, this typically involves a cryptographic snapshot of customer balances combined with an independent accountant's verification that the entity's assets cover those liabilities. For stablecoin issuers, it means showing that the reserves backing circulating tokens actually exist in the claimed form and quantity. For DeFi protocols and vaults, it means the onchain state is the reserve, and anyone can verify it directly.

The distinction between proof of reserves and a conventional audit is important. An attestation confirms a point-in-time snapshot: as of this date, the reserves existed and covered the token supply. As of mid-2026, no major stablecoin issuer has completed a full GAAP audit specifically of its stablecoin reserves. What Does the GENIUS Act Require?

The GENIUS Act, signed in July 2025, established the first federal framework governing payment stablecoins in the United States, and reserve disclosure is central to it. The Act requires permitted payment stablecoin issuers to publish monthly reserve composition reports examined by a registered public accounting firm, with CEO and CFO certification of their accuracy. For issuers with more than $50 billion in outstanding tokens, annual GAAP audits are required.

The AICPA published updated stablecoin reporting criteria alongside the regulatory framework: Part I in March 2025 covering reserve presentation and disclosure standards, and Part II in January 2026 establishing 15 controls criteria, known as SC1 through SC15, spanning token lifecycle management, reserve operations, vendor oversight, and cryptographic key management. These criteria define what a reserve attestation should cover and are designed to serve as the basis for attestation engagements under the Act.

For an institutional allocator, the GENIUS Act creates a meaningful baseline for US-regulated stablecoins: monthly third-party verification of reserves with named professional accountability. How Does Onchain Proof of Reserves Work?

For crypto-collateralized stablecoins and DeFi protocols, the reserve verification problem is structurally different from the fiat-backed case. The assets are onchain, which means anyone can verify collateral balances, vault health, and liquidation thresholds in real time using a blockchain explorer. The reserve is not a report; it is the live state of the smart contract.

This is where onchain proof of reserves goes further than any periodic attestation can. Stablecoin reserves are the load-bearing detail behind every dollar of supply, and a system that verifies those reserves every block is structurally more resilient than one that provides a monthly snapshot. The March 2026 USR collapse, where onchain monitoring flagged the unbacked minting event more than two hours before the official announcement, illustrated the real operational advantage of continuous verification over periodic reporting: an institution with real-time reserve monitoring had time to act; one reading a monthly report did not.

An exchange that moves borrowed funds through its wallet briefly to pass a snapshot and returns them afterward passes the snapshot but misrepresents its actual position. Where Do the Gaps Remain?

Despite the progress, meaningful gaps in reserve verification persist, and an allocator who understands them is better positioned to evaluate what a given disclosure actually proves.

The first is the attestation-versus-audit distinction already noted. An attestation that reserves existed on a given date says nothing about whether those reserves will be accessible under stress, whether the controls governing them are sound, or whether there are undisclosed liabilities that reduce the effective reserve. A reserve attestation may confirm that assets existed without assessing future liquidity pressure, governance quality, or liabilities outside the reporting framework. For fiat-backed stablecoins especially, the composition of the reserve matters as much as its size: a reserve concentrated in commercial paper or secured loans is less liquid under stress than one held in short-duration Treasuries and demand deposits.

The second is the off-chain trust problem. Fiat-backed stablecoin reserves exist in banks and custodial accounts that are not inherently visible onchain. Connecting the onchain token supply to the off-chain reserve requires an intermediary, whether an accountant's attestation or a proof-of-reserve oracle that polls custodian bank APIs. That intermediary step is where manipulation has historically occurred, and it is where the quality of the accounting firm and the frequency of verification matter most.

The third is scope. An attestation covers what the issuer chooses to include in its scope. A stablecoin that holds a complex mix of assets, some highly liquid and some not, can present an attestation that confirms the total value without making the composition easy to evaluate. The GENIUS Act and the AICPA criteria push toward greater composition disclosure, but the industry has not yet converged on a single standard that makes comparisons straightforward.

For DeFi protocols and vaults where the reserves are onchain, these gaps narrow considerably. The position is visible, the history is permanent, and continuous verification is possible. The residual risk is oracle quality for assets that have an off-chain price feed, and the smart-contract risk of the verification system itself.

What Should an Allocator Check?

Reserve verification due diligence reduces to a set of specific questions that go beyond accepting a headline claim that reserves exist.

For any stablecoin the vault uses, ask who performs the reserve attestation or audit and at what frequency. Monthly attestations from a major accounting firm under AICPA standards provide meaningful assurance; quarterly attestations from a smaller firm provide less. Ask about the composition of the reserves, not just the total: the proportion in demand deposits and short-duration Treasuries versus less liquid instruments determines what happens when large redemptions arrive simultaneously. Ask whether the attestation is a point-in-time snapshot or a continuous feed, and whether it covers liabilities as well as assets.

For onchain assets, verify the position directly. For a vault that uses a stablecoin as its denomination or collateral, the reserve quality of that stablecoin is part of the vault's own risk profile. A vault reporting a 7% yield in a stablecoin whose reserves are opaque and partially illiquid is a different product from one operating in a stablecoin with monthly third-party attestations and a reserve composed entirely of demand deposits and Treasuries.
